Exhaust Manifold Replacement

On 11/09/06  I posted in Vintage-Mustang.com forums inquiring about a price on a replacement stock manifold for a 1966  Mustang. I received a number of replys and some offering to give me the parts I needed for free. I took the offer of one guy in Alhambra and went to his house to pick up the parts. He gave me 2 semi rusted but in great shape left and right exhaust manifolds.  Mine have a number of cracks in them and need to be replaced quickly before things got even worse.

11/24/06 Brandon and I replaced both of the cracked exhaust manifolds on the mustang this four day weekend. I arrived at his house at 10am and we began at 10:30.am I went and bought a torque wrench and some silver paint at Kragen before we began working. We had a hard time starting since we didnt want to strip any of the bolts (or break them for that matter). I went and asked Will (mom’s neighbor) if he would come over and give us a hand. He had his own car project going on and said he’d help us get started. He brought over some larger wrenches and got all of the manifold bolts loosened up for us. He asked if I had the gasket kit for the car and told me I should go to Autozone to buy one. Brandon made the second of many trips to Autozone to pickup this part. On our way back we went by “computer bills” house to borrow some more tools and a car jack. We got back and got the car on jackstands and started on taking off the exhaust manifold. The drivers side one was in VERY bad shape. When Brandon took off port 5 and 6 bolts part of the manifold fell off. The drivers side had 2 major cracks in it. once he took off bolts 7 the middle part of the exhaust manifold fell off. The Passengers side was in better shape but had a hairline crack in it.

Brandon and I didnt finish until 10:00 midnight. We dropped the car back on the ground and started it up. We had some leaks so we called Computer Bill up and he said we should try driving it around then while it was stil warm we should try tightening the bolts a bit. We gave that a go the drove around a bit more and around 11:30 it stopped leaking. I headed home around midnight and didnt have any problems.
