If I had Google Glass? Hands on: I do have Google Glasses #ifihadglass

Google recently did a lottery for advance units of its new Google Glass wearable computing glasses that asked a simple question: #ifihadglass … in 50 words or less on either Twitter or Google+. I thought I’d take a chance and I posted on Google+ with this response:

#ifihadglass I’d be able to use them to remind me to do all the honey-do items my wife leaves for me to do.

Google Glass google+ account responded a month later stating that I was accepted into their program.

Hi Jason, thanks for applying! We’d like to invite you to join our #glassexplorers program. We’ll be sending you a private message with more details in the coming weeks — keep an eye on our stream at Project Glass.

Since it took them about a month to get through all submissions and select 8,000 that submitted their ideas for Google Glass, I almost didn’t notice their reply.

The winners will have to travel to New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco to pick up their Glass, which isn’t expected to be available on the mass market until late this year or early next year. I live in the LA area so I won’t have to start a indigogo or kickstarter campaign to buy a plane ticket. The $1500 is quite a bit of a barrier for entry, but as a typical early adopter and someone who loves to work with new technology, this may be a great way for me to contribute here at Stabley Times. Now I’m waiting for Google to send me a message letting me know how I go about getting my Glasses and what all is involved. I’ve been reading various articles about how there won’t be an NDA associated with this, so I’ll be free to share my experience with you. I’m coming from this from a bit of a different angle in that I’m a web developer (I love WordPress) and that I’m an iPhone user. In a recent post we have heard Glass will work on iPhones which is good since I’m in the iPhone camp.

I feel like my answer to the question #ifihadglass is a funny one, but I think what I’m really looking forward to doing is taking pictures of my kids playing hands free and participating in Google Hangouts straight from my face. It looks like I won’t be driving with them, at least not in West Virginia.

The next question is, what color Glass would you get? Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale, Cotton, Sky. I’m diggin’ the Sky ones.
