I like documenting things that happen in my life and podcasting happens all the time in my life, so I went through my Overcast library and pulled the whole list. It is a pretty honest snapshot of where my head is at: a heavy dose of Apple and tech commentary, a big homelab and self-hosting section, some smart home stuff, a couple of Formula 1 shows because its a big part of my sports fandom, and a few music and trivia picks to keep things from getting too nerdy. lol.

I grouped everything by genre below. Each one gets a short writeup, a link to the show's home on the web, and a note on where to subscribe. Almost all of these are in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and of course Overcast, so I mostly just point you to the official site where the subscribe links live.

Apple & Tech Commentary

This is the core of my feed. If you spend any time in the Apple nerd corner of the internet, most of these names will be familiar.

Accidental Tech Podcast Marco Arment, Casey Liss, and John Siracusa talking tech, programming, and Apple with the kind of detail that only three very opinionated developers can sustain. It is long, it is deep, and the Siracusa review tangents are worth the price of admission. I've been listening to them forever. Website: atp.fm

The Talk Show With John Gruber The Daring Fireball man himself, working through the week in Apple and tech with a rotating set of guests. Slow, conversational, and great for a long drive. Long ass podcast but I get a lot from it. Website: daringfireball.net/thetalkshow

AppStories Federico Viticci and John Voorhees from MacStories digging into apps, workflows, and the iOS power user world. This is the show that feeds my worst automation and shortcuts habits. I come around to this podcast maybe every other or third episode. Website: appstories.net

Stratechery Network

Stratechery Ben Thompson's analysis of tech strategy and business, which has basically become required reading and listening for understanding why the big platforms do what they do. The podcast feed pairs with the newsletter. It's good to know whats happening in the world of tech from the biz side of things. Website: stratechery.com · Subscriber feed set up through the site.

Dithering Ben Thompson and John Gruber, fifteen minutes per episode, twice a week, no more and no less. It is a paid show and the discipline of the format is the whole point. Tight, smart, and never overstays its welcome. John is limited to 15 mins with Ben and its a joy to listen to. Website: dithering.fm · Members-only feed you set up through the site.

The Verge Network

The Vergecast The Verge's flagship show about Brenden Carr being a dummy. On the week in gadgets and tech news with Nilay Patel, David Pierce, and the crew. Reliable Friday listening. Again, I run the ad-free edition. Website: theverge.com/the-vergecast · I pay for the Ad-free feed via The Verge.

Decoder Nilay Patel from The Verge interviewing leaders and unpacking the big structural questions in tech and business. I have the ad-free edition, which comes with a Verge subscription. Website: theverge.com/decoder-podcast-with-nilay-patel

Version History A newer Verge show where David Pierce, Nilay Patel, and rotating staff tell the story of the best, worst, and most influential gadgets ever made. Equal parts nostalgia and tech history. Website: theverge.com · I'm a subscriber of The Verge so I get the Ad-free feed

Homelab, Self-Hosting & Linux

This section is basically my day job and my hobby colliding. If you run a server in your closet, you will feel seen here.

2.5 Admins Allan Jude and Jim Salter, two sysadmins, plus producer Joe Ressington who can "just about configure a Samba share." Weekly tech news and listener admin questions, with a healthy obsession with ZFS. I havent explored the rest of the Late Night Linux family of podcasts they mention each episode. I found this one listening to the BitFlip show. Website: 2.5admins.com

The Uncast Show The official Unraid podcast, hosted by Ed Rawlings (you may know him as SpaceInvader One) and Stefano from SPX Labs. Unraid news, deep dives, and community chat. As an Unraid user this is must-listen, and watching SpaceInvader One go from community creator to full-time Unraid is fun. Website: unraid.net

BitFlip.show A newer independent show about the pragmatic side of infrastructure: self-hosting, homelabs, open source, and the real-world decisions engineers make, hosted by Alex, Adam, Geoff, and Stephen. Bonus points because one of the hosts is on the Unraid team. I listened to Alex and Chris Fisher on their old show Selfhosted and this one slots right into the gap that Selfhosted left when it closed up. Website: bitflip.show

Syntax - Tasty Web Development Treats Wes Bos and Scott Tolinski on full stack web development. Practical, friendly, and a good way to keep up with the JavaScript world even when it is moving faster than anyone can reasonably follow. I don't listen to these as much but I scan the titles of the episodes to find the gems. Website: syntax.fm

Jupiter Broadcasting Network

LINUX Unplugged Jupiter Broadcasting's flagship Linux show with Chris Fisher and Wes Payne. A weekly, community-driven take on Linux, open source, and self-hosting. This one has been in my rotation forever. Website: linuxunplugged.com

The Launch Also from Jupiter Broadcasting, a lighter weekly warm-up that pulls together the best stories and clips to set up your week. Good palate cleanser between the heavier shows. Website: jupiterbroadcasting.com/show/the-launch

Smart Home & Gadgets

The part of the feed that fuels my Home Assistant habit.

Home Assistant Podcast The community show all about Home Assistant from HK Media, hosted by Phil and Rohan. New features, integrations, and the general state of the open source smart home. I run the ad-free feed. Website: hasspodcast.io

HomeTech.fm Gavin Campbell, TJ Huddleston, and Seth Johnson covering the smart home and home technology industry from more of an installer and professional angle. A nice counterweight to the pure DIY shows. Website: hometech.fm

The Technical Difficulties Podcast The DIY Smart Home Guys, Pete Borchers, Brandon Doyle, and Vince Hylla, on the latest smart home trends, devices, and automation. More YouTube-creator energy than the others, which keeps it loose and fun. Website: Apple Podcasts

Home Gadget Geeks Jim Collison's long-running weekly show on gadgets, tech projects, and the geeky home, part of The Average Guy network. Comfortable, community-driven listening. Website: theaverageguy.tv

Tech News & Internet Culture

Shows about what is happening online and why it matters, with a bit of an edge.

The 404 Media Podcast The team behind 404 Media, the journalist-owned outlet, talking through their reporting on hacking, privacy, platforms, and the weirder corners of the internet. Some of the best original tech journalism going right now. Website: 404media.co

Hard Fork Kevin Roose and Casey Newton from The New York Times on the week in tech, AI, and the future. Smart and funny without being lightweight. My go-to for keeping up with the AI news cycle. Website: nytimes.com/column/hard-fork

Better Offline Ed Zitron's sharp, skeptical, frequently angry look at the tech industry and the people running it. If you want the counter-narrative to Silicon Valley hype, this is it. From Cool Zone Media and iHeartPodcasts. Website: iHeart

Search Engine PJ Vogt (formerly of Reply All) answering the questions you idly wonder about, from the trivial to the surprisingly deep. Beautifully produced narrative audio with a real curiosity at its center. Website: searchengine.show

Dot Social Flipboard CEO Mike McCue interviewing the builders and thinkers behind the fediverse and the open social web. If you care about Mastodon, ActivityPub, Bluesky, and where social media goes after the walled gardens, this is the one. Website: flipboard.com

News & Society

A little balance so it is not all servers and gadgets.

The Daily The New York Times' flagship daily news show. Twenty minutes or so on one big story, every weekday. The default for staying current. Website: nytimes.com/the-daily

Code Switch NPR's show on race, identity, and how those threads run through everything in American life. Thoughtful, well-reported, and consistently worth the time. Website: npr.org/codeswitch

Offline with Jon Favreau From Crooked Media, Jon Favreau talking with guests about how the internet is reshaping our brains, our politics, and our attention, and what a healthier relationship with it might look like. A bit ironic to listen to on a phone, but here we are. Website: crooked.com/podcast-series/offline-with-jon-favreau

Formula 1

Race weekends need a soundtrack.

Up To Speed Global's newer F1 podcast with a stacked lineup: Will Buxton, Naomi Schiff, David Coulthard, and Jolie Sharpe. Twice a week, with fast race reactions on Mondays and a deeper story plus interviews on Thursdays. Website: globalplayer.com

The Fast and the Curious Greg James, Betty Glover, and F1 broadcaster Christian Hewgill, plus a rolling cast of drivers, taking you inside the world of Formula 1. More personality and banter than hardcore analysis, which is exactly what I want between sessions. Website: Acast

Music

Two very different ways to listen to songs more closely.

Switched on Pop Musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding breaking down the making and meaning of pop hits. They explain the theory and craft in a way that makes you hear familiar songs completely differently. From Vulture and Vox. Website: switchedonpop.com

One Song Diallo Riddle and LUXXURY taking one song apart per episode, instrument by instrument, with a ton of humor and genuine love for the music. From Hartbeat. A great companion to Switched on Pop. Website: Apple Podcasts

Comedy, Trivia & Variety

The stuff that keeps the feed from being a productivity seminar.

Dear Hank & John Hank Green and John Green dispensing dubious advice, answering listener questions, and delivering the news from Mars and AFC Wimbledon. Officially "a comedy podcast about death," which undersells how warm and funny it is. It's a great show about 2 brothers talking about nothing and everything at the same time. Website: complexly.com

Lateral with Tom Scott Tom Scott and question master David Bodycombe run a comedy panel quiz built around lateral-thinking puzzles with weird, sideways answers. The kind of show where you shout guesses at your phone and are wrong almost every time. This is a podcast I wait and listen to with my wife Jen in the car, we really enjoy it. Website: lateralcast.com

OMG, why so many podcasts?

Look, I get it, its sounds like I listen to podcasts non stop and that isnt the case. Let me prioritize the ones that are worth it to me and that I listen to daily or event weekly.

All of The Verge podcasts & Stratechery Network shows - I listen to them moment they are released, it's just how it is. I pay for the subscription and I really like they content they produce.

Hard Fork - I listen to most of these episodes, I try my best to keep up with whats going on in tech and AI. One of the hosts is dating a guy from Anthropic so it adds a bit more flavor to the show.

Home Assistant Podcast - I listen to these every time they come out usually on the same day they are released.

Formula 1 podcasts - I listen to them during the season and if i miss one about the previous race and were on to the next race then I skip them. These are very much so ephemeral.

2.5 Admins, HomeTech, and the other smart home podcasts - I listen to these in the car when I am driving alone. It's an easy win to get these knocked out and I learn so much from them.

Anything you think I'm missing? Let me know in the comments.
