Upcoming birthday

I don’t usually take time off from work unless I really have to, or want to. Today I requested Jan 23rd off which is the day after my birthday. I plan to spend the day getting some things done around the house, and run some errands that can only happen during the day on a weekday. Sometimes I wish I could have 1 weekday off a week, but I couldn’t stand working on a weekend. Four day week and same pay? Sign me up!

In my teens I use to plan crazy birthday parties for myself. In my later teens and early 20’s I’d plan a trip to the ice skating rink up in Blue Jay “The Ice Castle”, which due to a cave in is no longer running. Since then (and most of those friends moved away) I haven’t planned anything cool like that. It was fun to get bundled up and drive up to the mountains 2 or 3 cars in a line we’d work our way up there. Once we arrived everyone would get hot chocolate and wait in line to pay and rent skates. Most of us only skated during our trips up there, they most likely thought I was crazy to dragging them up there. Usually 1/2 way through the session people would finally figure out how to skate. We’d wait for the Zamboni to finish resurfacing the ice and then everyone would freak out how easy it was to skate now that the ice was clean of debris and cut marks. By the end of the night we’d have blue faces while they played YMCA or some other song on their locked in playlist.

Now that I have kids I need to start a new tradition and do something like this. I’m not sure exactly what but I hope once I figure something out we can do it for years to come.
