Apple CarPlay iOS 7.1: Pioneer aftermarket car kit for iPhone iPad

Pioneer NEX car infotainment systems with CarPlay technology are set to be coming in the next few weeks, the company has been offering advance hands-on previews of how Apple’s in-car system will work.

Devices we’re released to a few media outlets CNBC, Macworld, and Digital Trends this week for hands on demos. CarPlay support will come to its refreshed NEX lineup in “a few weeks”.  Support will be coming to existing NEX infotainment systems from Pioneer in the form of a software update which many people are rejoicing about. Apple already launched CarPlay support in the iPhone with iOS 7.1, consumers are looking forward to these aftermarket head units.

Pioneer appears to be  first on the market to offer CarPlay support in their aftermarket head units after this weeks impending launch.

So what is CarPlay? CarPlay is like AirPlay for the AppleTV in that content from your iOS device can be played on the car stereo. The difference is that instead of the phones display being mirrored on the car stereo Apple’s native apps for Phone, Music, Maps, and Messages will interact with the head unit counterparts. Siri is also supported, allowing users to dictate text messages, get directions, and initiate a phone call. Apple has also added a “Now Playing” application for content, while users will be able to get back to the NEX system’s main menu with a Pioneer-created app button.
